How to use

  1. 1

Enter a year between 1900 and 2100. The current year is shown first.

  2. 2

Choose your time zone; it defaults to the zone of your device.

  3. 3

Scan the full moon table for supermoons, blue moons and lunar eclipses.

  4. 4

Scroll down for the new moons of the same year.

Full moon names

The names in the table follow the North American almanac tradition, which blends Native American, colonial and old European month names: Wolf Moon in January, then Snow, Worm, Pink, Flower, Strawberry, Buck, Sturgeon and Corn Moon, followed by Hunter’s, Beaver and Cold Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox, so it can fall in September or early October. When it falls in October, there is no separate Hunter’s Moon that year.

Supermoons and blue moons

A supermoon is a full moon that happens near perigee, the closest point of the Moon’s orbit. Definitions vary; this calendar flags full moons closer than 360,000 km (centre to centre) and shows every distance so you can compare. A blue moon here is the second full moon within one calendar month. Because the month depends on your time zone, a blue moon in one country may not be one in another, which is why the flags update when you change the zone.

Lunar eclipses

A lunar eclipse can only happen at full moon, when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up closely enough for the Moon to enter Earth’s shadow. Most years have two or three eclipse full moons. The table marks them as penumbral (only the faint outer shadow, hard to notice), partial or total.

Full moons in astrology

In astrology the full moon falls in the sign opposite the Sun and is traditionally associated with culmination, visibility and release, while the new moon is associated with beginnings. Many people use the calendar to plan rituals, journaling or simply a night of moon-watching. The sign of each full and new moon is calculated in the tropical zodiac and shown for reflection and entertainment.

Frequently asked questions

How many full moons are there in a year?

Usually twelve, but roughly every two to three years there are thirteen. The extra one creates a blue moon, either as a second full moon in a calendar month or as a fourth full moon in a season.

When is the next supermoon?

Open the current year and look for the supermoon label in the notes column. The distance column shows how close each full moon comes, so you can also spot near-misses.

Why is the full moon on a different date in another country?

A full moon is one instant for the whole planet. Depending on the time zone, that instant can fall on two different calendar dates. The calendar converts every time to the zone you select.

Are the times exact?

Yes. Each full and new moon is computed astronomically and shown to the minute in your chosen time zone, the same way astronomical almanacs do.
