What is in a natal chart
A birth chart is a map of the sky for the moment and place you were born. The outer ring holds the twelve zodiac signs, the spokes divide the chart into twelve houses starting from the Ascendant on the left, and the glyphs show where the Sun, Moon and planets stood. Lines in the centre connect planets that form aspects: red for squares and oppositions, violet for trines and sextiles, dashed green for quincunxes.
House systems and orbs
Placidus is the default because it is the most widely used system in modern Western astrology. Whole Sign houses make each sign one house, starting with the rising sign, a method older than Placidus that is popular again. Equal houses count 30° steps from the exact Ascendant. Aspect orbs start at 8° for conjunctions and oppositions, 7° for trines and squares, 5° for sextiles and 3° for quincunxes, and you can tighten or widen each one.
No birth time?
Without a time the tool draws a solar chart: planets for noon local time, with no houses, Ascendant or Midheaven, because those change every few minutes. Sign positions of the slower planets will still be right; the Moon can be up to about 7° off. Even an approximate time from a family member is enough for a first look at the houses.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this birth chart?
Planet positions are accurate to about an arc-minute, and angles and house cusps follow the standard formulas. In practice the limit is the birth time: an error of four minutes moves the Ascendant by about a degree.
Why does it show a UTC offset under the form?
Your local birth time is converted to Universal Time using the time zone history of the city, including daylight saving time at that date. The offset is shown so you can check it, for example against a birth certificate that states summer time.
Which zodiac does it use?
The tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, measured from the March equinox. For the sidereal (Vedic) Moon sign there is a separate tool.
Is my birth data stored?
Everything is calculated in your browser. Your last entry is remembered only on this device so the other chart tools can pre-fill it.
